Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly
There's a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly
Why she had to go?
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday
Yesterday love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Why she had to go?
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday
Yesterday love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
So the song is sung by Paul Mccartney and its one of the only songs where its only one member of the Beatles performing. So the song begins with yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Which leads me to a ssume that the singer has a serious problem that needs rectifying. There are many things at stake in this story, whatever the problems are and his love left him, most likely for his problems with whatever they are. Then you hear "Why she have to go i don't know she wouldn't say. I said something wrong now I long for yesterday." Then my original thought is wrong and maybe she left because he said something insincere and made her realize he was a jerk. Who knows, all I care about is the song is good and makes my heart melt because it's sincere and I love it.

I love that song, good choice, and I really like your interpretation of it!
ReplyDeleteMac, you chose such a great song. The idea here is to use the techniques we talked about in class to analyze it, though. How does McCartney get his meaning across? There is metaphor (love was a game) and symbolism (yesterday symbolizing carefree, playful happiness and love; shadow symbolizing unhappiness), as well as lots of assonance on the long "A" sound, with some long "O" and long "E" that create a euphonic effect. McCartney uses simple diction and a mournful, nostalgic tone to show us the sorrow and regret of someone who had love "yesterday" and doesn't have it anymore.
